What is Health Coaching?
Health Coaching is the application of evidence-based strategies to actively and safely engage in health behaviour changes thru the use of skilful conversations and clinical interventions.
Health coaching is a relatively new and quickly growing part of the healthcare
system. Health coaching uses an integrative approach to physical, mental,
social, emotional, environmental and existential changes to improve
a client’s health. Health Coaching addresses the many
interrelated issues that affect poor health to
achieve long-term results.
Health Coaching goes beyond “12 week beach body programs,” or “pre-wedding weight loss,”
to something truly meaningful, sustainable, and even inspiring.
Health coaching works by empowering people with knowledge and skills to become
active participants in their own care and achieve their self-identified health goals.
Who is a Health Coach?
A Health coach is a certified or credentialed professional who can safely guide clients and patients who may have chronic conditions or those at moderate to high risk for chronic conditions.
Health Coaches are also credentialed to help develop programs of peak performance, corporate wellness, and recovery programs for athletes.
Just like sports coaches help athletes excel at cricket or soccer, Health Coaches help people excel at their health.
A health coach might help a client with:

-
Stress Management
-
Sleep
-
Weight Loss
-
Mental Health
-
Managing Diabetes
-
Nutrition
-
Exercise
-
Implementing Autoimmune protocols
-
Chronic disease or illness management
-
Improve a person's relationship with food.
Health Coaches can also narrow their area of expertise, working with specific populations like:

-
young moms/pre or post natal clients;
-
college athletes/athletes wanting to improve their recovery routines; or
-
seniors looking to boost their muscular strength and cardiovascular fitness.
Health Coaches may work in similar settings as other health practitioners, including collaborative care with doctors, integrative medicine clinics, hospitals, corporate programs, wellness centers and community health programs.
A health coach is a Coaching Alchemist, who turn superficial physical goals into substantive life goals.
Health Coaching Standards and Credentials
The field of health coaching was diffuse for a long time, but standards strengthened in 2016 when the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaches (NBHWC) joined forces with the
National Board of Medical Examiners (the certifying body that licenses
physicians). This alliance designated a unified code of ethics, education,
research and credentials to standardize training and certification
for health coaches to be integrated into a wide range of
clinical and nonclinical settings.
